In 1959 Dr. & Mrs. Smith were appointed as medical missionaries to Nigeria, West Africa, by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention where they served until 1968. Dr. Smith was the Superintendent of the Baptist Medical Center in Ogbomosho, Nigeria. A tragic automobile accident in Nigeria took Dr. Smith's life on May 16, 1968. His grave is located on the grounds of the hospital. This untimely death made necessary the relocation to the states of Eunice and her three children, Melba Claire, Loy Connell, Jr. and Brian Andrews Smith.
