Mrs. Matthews, wife of Reuben Matthews, killed by a cyclone, about February
20, 1884, in Harnett County.
A notice also appeared in the Raleigh "Farmer and Mechanic" (February 27,
1884 edition):
Mrs. Matthews, wife of Reuben Matthews, killed by a cyclone, February 19,
1884, near the Johnston-Harnett county line.
The tornadoes which tore through Johnston and Harnett Counties, NC in
February, 1884 caused tremendous damage to many farms, and there were quite
a few deaths caused by this event.
