JOSEPH MATTHEWS. He was born about 1710-15, and married ELIZABETH, perhaps the daughter of JOHN STEVENSON and CATHERINE WIGGS. On Oct. 15, 1753, he sold 150 acres on the South side of Three Creeks to John Brewer [Southampton County, VA Deed Book 2, p. 7].
He and his family were residing in Edgecombe Co., NC prior to July 13, 1764, when he conveyed two tracts of 275 acres and 691 acres on the North side of Swift Creek to Isaac Hilliard [Edgecombe Co., NC
Deed Book C, pp. 296, 297]. He removed to old Cumberland County (now Harnett County) after 1771. His will was probated in Cumberland County in January, 1791.[Jeff Wester]

In the Name of God Amen I Hugh Matthews of the County of Southampton
in Nottoway Parrish do make this Writing my last will & Testament in form & manner as followeth
Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Jonas Matthews Son of John Matthews Deceased Two Hundred Acres of Land lying on the East side the Angelica Swamp being Part of a Tract of Land formerly taken up by Capt Wm West & now possessed by Edward Drew I say I give the said Tract of Land to him & the Heirs of his Body Lawfully Begotten
Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Ralph Matthews son of Ralph Matthews a Certain Tract or parcel of Land lying on the East side the Angelica Swamp a survey Lately made by Major James Baker the contents not known at present I say I give the said Land to him & his Heirs
Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Soloman Stephenson a Certain Tract or parcel of Land lying on the James Branch bounded by Edward Drews Line & my own Line the Contents unknown at present I give the said Land to him & his Heirs

Hugh Ma tthews was born circa 1680-1690 in Isle of Wight County. He
married and beca me the father of twelve children. The family lived on a
large tract of land on Angelica Swamp in a part of Isle of Wight County
which became Southampton County, Virginia.
The parents of Hugh Matthews are not known, but it has been theorized
that Ralph and Alice Matthews may be the progenitors of this family
because they were early in Virginia. From the HERITAGE OF HARNETT
COUNTY, "RALPH MATTHEWS" by Faye Matthews Burch: Ralph and Alice
Matthews were the first names that come to us from the Isle of Wight
County in Virginia.
