    SARAH MATTHEWS. She married first GILBERT MAC KENNY, whose estate was appraised by Timothy Thorpe, Henry Rose, and James Jones, and returned by SARAH MAC KENNY on July 10, 1746 [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5,p. 26]. It is highly probable that she married secondly, SOLOMON STEVENSON, Sr. (her deceased sister's husband) prior to August 31, 1750.

    In the Name of God Amen I Hugh Matthews of the County of Southampton
    in Nottoway Parrish do make this Writing my last will & Testament in form & manner as followeth
    Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Jonas Matthews Son of John Matthews Deceased Two Hundred Acres of Land lying on the East side the Angelica Swamp being Part of a Tract of Land formerly taken up by Capt Wm West & now possessed by Edward Drew I say I give the said Tract of Land to him & the Heirs of his Body Lawfully Begotten
    Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Ralph Matthews son of Ralph Matthews a Certain Tract or parcel of Land lying on the East side the Angelica Swamp a survey Lately made by Major James Baker the contents not known at present I say I give the said Land to him & his Heirs
    Item I give & Bequeath to my Grandson Soloman Stephenson a Certain Tract or parcel of Land lying on the James Branch bounded by Edward Drews Line & my own Line the Contents unknown at present I give the said Land to him & his Heirs
    Item I give & Bequeath to my two sons Edward Matthews & Wm Matthews a New survey of Land lately made by me lying on James Branch & Bounded by the Indians Line & the branch commonly called the Indian branch I say I give the said Land to my said Sons to be Equally Divided Between then according to Quantity & Quality to them & their Heirs
    Item I give and Bequeath to my Loving wife Ann Matthews the Plantation I now live on During her widowhood and afterwards I Bequeath the same to my son Joseph Matthews Likewise my Desire is that my son Joseph Matthews may Build him a house the which he hath on part of the Said Land & my Desire that he may live where he is on that part of the Land that was Laid of to him & she on the manner plantation without Molestation the time of her widowhood I say I give the said Plantation to him & his son Jacob Matthews & there Heirs
    Item I give and Bequeath to my son Joseph Matthews my still with all conveyances thereunto belonging Likewise I Bequeath the third part of the Liquor both cyder & Brandy made on the plantation to my wife Ann Matthews During her widowhood & my Will & Desire is that my three sons Edward & Wm may have the Liberty of Stilling their cyder in the said Still as Long as she last on free cost?
    Item I Bequeath to my Loving wife Ann Matthews my Negro fellow called Jack During her widowhood & after to have his freedom and my Desire that my wife Ann Matthews may not take anybody to Crop it with her Except her own son.
    Item my will & Desire is that all my Household Stuff & Goods of all Kinds may be Equally Divided between my Loving wife Ann Matthews & my three Sons Edward Wm & Joseph Except my wife Ann Matthews should have a mind to have the plantation then my will & Desire is that she may have two Cows & calves or year old shiny? black Riding horse saddle & bridal or otherwise if she Continues after her Dec to be Equally Divided among them Likewise my desire is that my wife Ann Matthews may have one Feather Bed & furniture

    From HERITAGE OF HARNETT COUNTY, "HUGH MATTHEWS THE MATTHEWS FAMILY":
    Hugh Ma tthews was born circa 1680-1690 in Isle of Wight County. He
    married and beca me the father of twelve children. The family lived on a
    large tract of land on Angelica Swamp in a part of Isle of Wight County
    which became Southampton County, Virginia.
    The parents of Hugh Matthews are not known, but it has been theorized
    that Ralph and Alice Matthews may be the progenitors of this family
    because they were early in Virginia. From the HERITAGE OF HARNETT
    COUNTY, "RALPH MATTHEWS" by Faye Matthews Burch: Ralph and Alice
    Matthews were the first names that come to us from the Isle of Wight
    County in Virginia.
