Baker, John, Private
Enlisted in New Hanover County at age 34, March 18, 1863 for three years. Captured at Fort Fisher January 15, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, MD., where he died January 31, 1865 of chronic diarrhea.

John married Tilitha Smith on 10 Feb 1853 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Tilitha (daughter of William Smith and Mary Unknown) was born between 1832 and 1833. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1. Lougenia Baker was born on 2 Sep 1860 in Harnett Co., North Carolina; died on 25 Apr 1923; was buried in Plymouth Christian Church Cemetery.

James Baker is shown between 20 - 30 years old. He has one son under age 5 (John, b. 1827) and one son between 5 - 10 (James B., b. 1830). His wife is between 20 - 30 and two daughters under age 5 (Margaret, b. 1828 and Lilla, b. 1825).

1840 Census: Page 257.

James is now between 30 - 40. One son is between 15 - 20 (John) and a son between 5 - 10 (James B.) and another son under age 5 (Joseph, b. 1838). His wife is between 30 - 40 and he has three daughters. James' brother Atkins is living with him.

1850 Census:

James is 46 years old and his wife, Mary, is 47. Tillitha,the oldest girl still at home (may be son John Baker's wife), Joseph, Ann (b. 1843) and William O. (b. 1844) are all living at home. James B. and John have both moved out on their own.

1860 Census:

Mary Baker shows up as Head of Household; James has died. Her sons Joseph and William O. are living with her.

1870 Census:

No listing for Mary; presumed dead.

James married Mary Unknown about 1824. Mary was born between 1803 and 1805 in Buck Horn District, Cumberland Co, North Carolina; died before 1870 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

North Carolina became the 12th State in 1789....A colony of English speaking Quakers from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Nantucket settled in Chatham County.

1790 Census

There is a John Baker shown as being over the age of 35 with five sons; one over the age of 16. This son was born before 1774, Burwell was born about 1772 so it is possible that this John Baker from the 1790 Census was Burwell's father. John Baker had four other sons that were under age 16, (born after 1774) three females are also shown, two daughters and his wife. Other Bakers in this Census living nearby were Archibald, Daniel, and James.

Burrill Baker is shown (Column F) as being over age 45,(actually 48) with four sons (Column A) under age 10 (Admiral, age 10; Anderson, age 8; Henry, age 6; Atkins, age 5;), three sons (Column B) between 10 - 16 years old, (James, age 16; Bryant, age 13; and Blake?) and one son (Column D) between age 18 - 26 (John, age 18). On the 1800 Census he was shown with one son, (Over age 21 by the time of the 1820 and probably not shown living with Burwell on this census) He has one daughter (Column H) between age 16 - 26(Charlotte, age 21) and his wife(Mary Jones), (Column J) age under 45.

Burril Baker is shown with two sons between 10 - 15 Henry, age 16 and Atkins, age 15), three sons between 15 to 20 (Admiral, age 20; Anderson, age 18; Henry, age 16; ). (Blake married Nov 16, 1829)
Bryant, age 23; James age 26; and John, age 28 are individually listed in this census on pages 58 & 59. Burril's wife is between 40 - 50. The only daughter living at home is between 5 - 10. ( Sarah Catherine, age 9)

1840 Census: Page 257

Burril's name does not appear in the 1840 Census. However, Admiral Baker has a woman between age 60-70 living with him who probably is his mother, Mary. Admiral is not married.

I did a complete search of the Cumberland County census records from 1800 to 1840 and found no other individuals who could possibly be this Bu??l, Burl, Burril, Burrill, Burrel, or Burwell other than this one Burwell Baker. I do not know how to spell his name, obviously neither did the census takers, I am not sure that even he knew how to spell his own name, the census records indicate that he could not read or write. The most respectable source available to me is the Marriage Index and it spells his name Burwell, it is also the earliest quotable source I have found with his name on it, but I will continue call him Burrel until I find a better reason to change the pronunciation. I found in the 1830 index it lists him as Burril Baker.

Burwell married Mary Jones on 30 Oct 1798 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Mary (daughter of James Jones and Rachel Unknown) was born in 1777 in Wake Co., North Carolina; died before 1850 in Buck Horn District, Cumberland Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Sir Walter Raleigh received a grant from Queen Elizabeth in 1584, which he used to colonize North Carolina. His first expedition in 1585 failed to establish a permanent colony. In 1587 another group tried, but the settlement vanished. The first permanent settlement was started in 1653, when groups from Virginia occupied the northern section of Albemarle Sound. Around 1746 Scottish Highlanders came to the Upper Cape Fear River in large groups. After 1770 a colony of English speaking Quakers settled in Chatham County.

The Colonial Legislature passed an Act in 1754 which resulted in the political division of Bladen County, thus forming Cumberland County

1787 April 25 - Between Richard Allen, Esq. Sheriff and ANDREW BAKER (Property lost by JOHN BAKER to satisfy Thomas Robins ) 200 ac mouth Roans Creek - branch New River - same granted JOHN BAKER by State 23 Oct. 1782

John is listed as being over age 45 having two sons still living at home, both of whom are between age 10 - 16. (born between 1784-1790, Burril is listed separately as head of household (over age 26). Also listed separately are Bryant (over age 26) and Archibald (over age 26). These could be John's other three boys shown on the 1790 census who are now head of their own households.

John is not shown; presumed dead. Susannah is shown as head of household.

Susannah shows up living very close (Page 58) to John, Bryant, Burril and James. John R. Baker's probable son Burwell Baker is over 60 years old on this census.
