Lucinda married Josepheus Carey Benton Hinesley in 1885. Josepheus (son of Thomas Hinesley and Winnifred Womack) was born on 12 May 1854 in North Carolina; died on 18 May 1922 in Gatesville, Coryell Co., Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. Wiley Hinesley was born on 5 Dec 1900; died in Jul 1975.
3. Herman Hinesley was born on 23 Jun 1906 in Gatesville, Coryell Co., Texas; died on 12 Nov 1987 in Gatesville, Coryell Co., Texas.
4. Bernice F. Hinesley was born in Feb 1888; died in 1957.
5. Sarah Magnolia Hinesley was born on 7 Feb 1896 in Gatesville, Coryell Co., Texas; died on 6 Jan 1936 in Gatesville, Coryell Co., Texas.
6. Lettie Lee Hinesley was born on 9 Oct 1892; died on 24 Apr 1980.

Emily, the mother of Sydney Baker is shown on this census taken on June 14, 1900. Emily is shown as having 2 children with 2 living and is listed as widowed. This census should have said that she had 6 children, since she had 4 while married to Anderson James Baker. The general family consensus is that she and Jackson J. Baker were not married.

John is between 20 - 30 years old with two sons under age 5 (John B., b. 1826 and Anderson J., b. 1828). His wife is over 20 and they have no daughters.

John is about 40 years old with two sons now aged between 10 - 15 years old. His wife is about 40. They have two daughters, one between 5 - 10 (Louise, b. 1832), and one between 10 - 15 ( Lucinda, b. 1830).

1850 Census:

John is 52 and his wife Mary is 51. His son, Anderson J. is 22, Lucinda is 20, Louise is 18 and they now have a son, Alex, aged 7. John B. is 24, married and living next door.

1860 Census:

John is now 58 . Mary is shown as 58, as well. Alex is listed correctly as 17 and is the only child living at home.

North Carolina became the 12th State in 1789....A colony of English speaking Quakers from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Nantucket settled in Chatham County.

1790 Census

There is a John Baker shown as being over the age of 35 with five sons; one over the age of 16. This son was born before 1774, Burwell was born about 1772 so it is possible that this John Baker from the 1790 Census was Burwell's father. John Baker had four other sons that were under age 16, (born after 1774) three females are also shown, two daughters and his wife. Other Bakers in this Census living nearby were Archibald, Daniel, and James.

Burrill Baker is shown (Column F) as being over age 45,(actually 48) with four sons (Column A) under age 10 (Admiral, age 10; Anderson, age 8; Henry, age 6; Atkins, age 5;), three sons (Column B) between 10 - 16 years old, (James, age 16; Bryant, age 13; and Blake?) and one son (Column D) between age 18 - 26 (John, age 18). On the 1800 Census he was shown with one son, (Over age 21 by the time of the 1820 and probably not shown living with Burwell on this census) He has one daughter (Column H) between age 16 - 26(Charlotte, age 21) and his wife(Mary Jones), (Column J) age under 45.

Bryant, age 23; James age 26; and John, age 28 are individually listed in this census on pages 58 & 59. Burril's wife is between 40 - 50. The only daughter living at home is between 5 - 10. ( Sarah Catherine, age 9)

Burril's name does not appear in the 1840 Census. However, Admiral Baker has a woman between age 60-70 living with him who probably is his mother, Mary. Admiral is not married.

I did a complete search of the Cumberland County census records from 1800 to 1840 and found no other individuals who could possibly be this Bu??l, Burl, Burril, Burrill, Burrel, or Burwell other than this one Burwell Baker. I do not know how to spell his name, obviously neither did the census takers, I am not sure that even he knew how to spell his own name, the census records indicate that he could not read or write. The most respectable source available to me is the Marriage Index and it spells his name Burwell, it is also the earliest quotable source I have found with his name on it, but I will continue call him Burrel until I find a better reason to change the pronunciation. I found in the 1830 index it lists him as Burril Baker.

Burwell married Mary Jones on 30 Oct 1798 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Mary (daughter of James Jones and Rachel Unknown) was born in 1777 in Wake Co., North Carolina; died before 1850 in Buck Horn District, Cumberland Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
