Bryant was married five times. We have found twelve (14) of his children. He died
between March 1885 and February 1894. He was listed as deceased when his son Jeremiah Jackson applied for a marriage license in February 1894.

The 1830 Census Index has his name spelled "Biyan Bokey" but this individual is Bryant Baker, a son of Burwell "Burrill" Baker. The photocopy of the Census schedule clearly shows his name as Bryant Baker. This Census indicates he is between 20 - 30 years old. he is shown with only one son under the age of 5 (Dixon, b. 1829). His wife is between 20 - 30 (Rachel (or maybe Vicie) Robinson, b. 1810).

On the 1840 Census, Bryant Baker is listed as being between 30 to 40 years old (b.1800-1810). He has two sons between age 10 to 15 years old (b.1825-1830 Dixon, b. 1828 and Jeremiah, b. 1830). He has another son who is under age 5 born after 1835 (Andrew H., b. 1838). His wife is between 30 - 40, she was born after 1810 and there are two daughters shown as under age 5, born after 1835 (Hephzibah, b. 1836 and Lenza, b. 1835). One daughter is listed as between age 5 - 10 (b. 1800-1835, Emiline, b. 1832).
Bryant Baker's presumed brothers; Admiral, Henry, James and John are all listed on the same page, # 257 Cumberland Co.,

    1850 Census:

Bryant is 43 years old. His present wife, Anna Roberson (as shown on the Marriage Index) is 40. His oldest daughter, Emiline is 18 single and still living at home. Lenza is 16, Hephzibah is 14, Andrew is 12, Patrick is 8, and George is age 2. Bryant's older sons Jackson ("JJ" Jeremiah) and Dixon are separately listed as heads of households. Bryant's Mother-in-law, named Anna Robinson, is individually listed with her daughter, Elizabeth, living two homes down on the same page. She is 80 and Elizabeth is 42. Bryant's son Hardy Baker was not found on this census leading to my conclusion that he was probably born after 1850 and George, age 2 appears to be the son of Anna Roberson age 40, that married Bryant Baker on Dec. 19, 1847 the other children's mother Rachel Robinson probably died around 1844.

1850 Agriculture Schedule of 1850 Census- Cumberland County
    (page 897 - Northern Division, 21 August 1850)

BRYANT BAKER - 30 acres improved, 45 acres unimproved, $75 cash value of farm, $5 value of farm implements; 1 horse, 15 swine, $50 value of livestock; 15 bushels wheat, 10 bushels rye, 250 bushels corn, 200 lbs rice, 15 bushels peas and beans, 5 bushels Irish potatoes, $25 value of home-made manufactures; $45 value of animals slaughtered.
    _______

    1860 Census:

Apparently Anna Roberson (b. 1810), who married Bryant Baker 12/19/1847 has died prior to 1860. Ann Unknown, born in 1824 is shown as his wife in 1860. A male, B. C. Baker, aged 18 is living with them, however, his precise identity is a mystery to me. (He probably is Patrick H. Baker, he would be 18 now) Bryant's older sons, Dixon, "Jack" Jeremiah and Andrew are all individually enumerated in this Census; George (G. W), now age 11, is still living at home. The new children listed in the family in 1860 are Hardy, age 9 (b. 1851), Benton, age 7 (b. 1852), M. E. (Mary E.), age 5 (b. 1855), S. G. (Sarah Delight). age 3, (b. 1857), and Susan, age 2 (b. 1858). Since Bryant's present wife is Ann age 36 whereas his wife "ANNA" of the 1850 Census should be 50 now, they are probably not the same person; however, I have no way of determining whose children are whose - only that they are all named Baker and are children of Bryant's. I am very confused about the marriage date (1847) shown on the Marriage Index. How does Bryant's wife (Anna Roberson, the mother of George) in the 1850 Census who is shown as being born in 1810 and is 40 years old on the 1850 Census, then show up as Ann, age 36 in the 1860 Census? These two women both named Ann must be different individuals.
    ________

    1870 Census:

Bryant's wife, Ann, should be about 46 in this Census; however, she does not appear in his household at all. Therefore, she is assumed to be deceased. Who Knows? Mary Baker is keeping house for him and she is age 40. Bryant's relationship with Mary is unclear. She is not his daughter Mary, age 13, but could be yet another wife or perhaps a widowed daughter- in- law. A male aged 10, Columbus, is listed but the order of enumeration suggests that he is not Bryant's child, but Mary Baker's. Betsy Robinson, age 65 is also listed with the family, I believe she is Bryant's sister-in-law. Dixon is absent since he died in the war. Andrew Baker also died in the war, along with many other Baker fathers, sons, uncles, cousins and nephews from Harnett Co. The Civil War decimated most North Carolina families, and really complicated the historical records. There were a great many widows and orphans on the 1870 Census.

  1. 8.  Burwell Baker was born in 1773 in Wake Co., North Carolina (son of John R. Baker and Susannah Unknown); died before 1840 in Buck Horn District, Cumberland Co, North Carolina.

    Notes:

North Carolina became the 12th State in 1789....A colony of English speaking Quakers from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Nantucket settled in Chatham County.

    1790 Census

There is a John Baker shown as being over the age of 35 with five sons; one over the age of 16. This son was born before 1774, Burwell was born about 1772 so it is possible that this John Baker from the 1790 Census was Burwell's father. John Baker had four other sons that were under age 16, (born after 1774) three females are also shown, two daughters and his wife. Other Bakers in this Census living nearby were Archibald, Daniel, and James.

    1798 Marriage Records:

    [Bob Baker]

I did a complete search of the Cumberland County census records from 1800 to 1840 and found no other individuals who could possibly be this Bu??l, Burl, Burril, Burrill, Burrel, or Burwell other than this one Burwell Baker. I do not know how to spell his name, obviously neither did the census takers, I am not sure that even he knew how to spell his own name, the census records indicate that he could not read or write. The most respectable source available to me is the Marriage Index and it spells his name Burwell, it is also the earliest quotable source I have found with his name on it, but I will continue call him Burrel until I find a better reason to change the pronunciation. I found in the 1830 index it lists him as Burril Baker.

Burwell married Mary Jones on 30 Oct 1798 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Mary (daughter of James Jones and Rachel Unknown) was born in 1777 in Wake Co., North Carolina; died before 1850 in Buck Horn District, Cumberland Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
